Any suggestions on setup, use raid or just throw hdds into a windows 7 box.  My thing was i loved the easy set up of WHS for network. Maybe I’ll do a windows 7 box and try whs2.  Not sure yet.

Ok WHS is dead… should i rebuild it?  Not sure what to do anymore.  I am sticking with Sagetv until epg is gone, I have 2 licenses and 2 extenders so I should be ok for a while.  My issue is where to store dvds and recordings.  I am thinking of using Windows 7 as my sagetv server for recordings but I am not sure how to go about designing this entire system.  WHS + window 7.  I dont like that WHS 2 doesnt have DE, I hate that WHS1 doesnt have 3TB compat.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

So i plugged in the specs of my pc into psu calculator and it comes out to be about 700 watts.  So I am not sure which power supply play it safe with teh 1200 watt, or get the cosair 1000w.  Any suggestions?

The speed might be because its a bunch of small files.  Since it seems when i transfer big files it slowly ramps up to about 36 MB/s .. if its a small file it can never get that fast since the ramp up time it too long to increase the MB/s

So i installed Disk Managment and i am transfering a folder from my pool to an outside hdd about 2000 files in it.  Activity doesnt go above 5 MB/s, is this average for 5400 rpms?  I zipped up one folder and it came to 15 gbs and moved that .. that one moved at 50 MB/s .. I think thats average for the samsung drives.  Is this type of activity normal.  Is moving a bunch of files when i select all and copy slowing down my transfer speed.

Going to run an experiement:

 

1. Build the new whs:

1 1tb(primary)

2 2tb

2. add some data

3. clone primary drive

4. put the clone partition in a laptop 160gb drive and change the partition from 20gb to 60gb.

5. Run it for a week to see if it dies. might install hdpvr and sagetv for it to test with

6.  if it works.  Ill buy a ssd and have 60gig system drive 60gig D: parition on my current primary whs system.

Curious how hard it is to increase the size of the primary drive.

I am thinking of giving up on the idea of an ssd as primary drive.   The alignment issue is just too much of a hassle.  Not sure what drive to use for the primary drive.  any ideas?

I am keeping my old whs up and running with sagetv.  The new one I am discussing here will only be for backups, dvds, etc.  My old whs will be sagetv exclusively.

I can’t think of a reason to move away from my current setup for sagetv.

I really like having the pool for my recordings so my sagetv will be in whs even if its not in the new server. Then again if i have it in its own windows7 box it will force me to delete stuff. hmm

Also contemplating getting a hardware raid 5/6 card and using that for my apps.  I dont like that sagetv folder is in a20gb drive.  

31 hdd system:if i use rppc 4224 it willbe 25 disk instead.

1 ssd for main drive

5 drives in hardware raid 5 for apps

(i think i can do symbolic links, not sure ill test it out to see if i install sagetv and put symobolic links will it break)

25 drives in pool:

DVD:FlexRaid

Music: FlexRaid

TV recordings backup: FlexRaid  – back up from other server moved during the night(need to figure out how to do this.. script maybe).

Ill look into unraid,  seems like it might do what I want.  It’s only going to store files I dont want on my other whs server.  The other whs server already has 32tb of data(well 15tb of recordings in duplication).

I am going to use the it just to store some of my video files.  I have a Q9400 laying around somewhere and a compatible mb.  Only thing missing really is just the power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139014. cosair 1200 watt

I have a few sata cards laying around should be enough to put in 11 hdds for now.  

I can use my old antec p80 case.

I am hoping to eventually get a new case. not sure what to get yet.  Might get norco rpc 4224 and a 4U rack.  Or maybe the Lian Li PC-343B.  

I am probably going to end up using WHS anyway, its easy to setup.

haha, yeah i do need to start deleting stuff.  I’ll see what i can do.. just found out 5 of my f4 2tb need firmware updates and they need advance drive cluster fix.  So much work.. and i have update to sagetv7 and setup plugins.  Never ending..  By the way after beta update i love my hd300.  Kicks ass.

Going to convert an old case into an external enclosure using two or three addonics.  Should be able to fit anywhere from 8 to 15 hdds into one.
