I immediately thought of FF in his performance, but I think that character works quite well in this show.  If they can continue with the family problems, rather than turning it into a “baddie of the week” storyline, I think it’ll hold up.

If you truly need the half-height, obviously go for it.  As you said, you will definitely be limited in the choice of hardware.  You may also find that parts may be more expensive.  So, if you truly have a choice and a full-height case will work, I would definitely go that route.  As you get into these builds, you may not see what other uses you’ll come up with, where you may need more cards or more power.  I started out with a full HTPC and quickly realized I needed to break it out into a server/client setup, due to how quickly I was expanding my storage capacity and all the cool things I wanted to run (comskip, FTP, backups, etc.).

We watched the 2nd episode of Outsourced and I’m damn near embarrassed to say that I’m going to watch the 3rd episode.  There’s enough going on to make me wonder what’s going to happen next.  Quite honestly, I WANTED to hate this show, but I have to admit that it’s holding my interest.

I’m with htpc_user…  the theaters around here are terrible.  Forget about any surround sound.  The entire audio setup is turned up way too loud, so that you can actually get a little bit of a rumble.  The picture can be grainy and the screens tend to have spots or tears.  Besides that, I really don’t need a huge screen for most movies.  Iron Man, Transformers, Die Hard…  action movies, in other words…  those can benefit from a big screen.  But, I’ll still have a better experience at home, both aurally (surround sound I can hear) and visually (crisp picture).

Yeah, but you’ll have to buy new shoes because they’ll be super glued to the floor of the theater.  There’s the financial benefit… you can’t buy a new pair of shoes for <$30.
I'm not sure we're talking about the same kind of theater. 😉
ROFL... yeah, guess I walked right into that one.  ;D

Timing is part of what distinguishes that know what they’re doing from those that don’t 🙂

FWIW – I have a feeling that Jan/Feb 2011 will be the perfect time to build a low power, quiet, 3D, HDMI 1.4, bit streaming HTPC.

    D’oh!  Very, very good point!

While that’s true – the problem is that the stated goals are bizarre given product timing that they should have known about.  I don’t think it’s possible for them to have picked a worse time to build that box; had they waited a month (or two) significantly cheaper/better hardware would have been available as well as nVidia’s HDMI 1.4 driver.  Anyone who follows their guidance to achieve similar objectives and doesn’t do some homework will be completely screwed.

This is probably why magazines don’t do these types of builds very often.  There’s never a “perfect” time.  I won’t begin to understand how long it takes for a magazine article to go from “idea” to “newstand”, but I get the feeling that’s the piece we’re not aware of and it probably played a bigger role than we realize.  Too bad there’s no website out there, devoted to HTPCs, which could publish something in a more timely fashion…  😉

It happened so fast, I missed it.  Who had their hand up first?  ;D

Yes it does.  Especially when you consider that in that same time frame the budget theaters that show movies at the end of their theatrical run will let you in for only a buck or two and won’t make you take out a 2nd mortgage to buy a soda and some popcorn.

Okay, in all seriousness, this whole idea is ridiculous.  I'm sure some (very rich) people will be willing to do this, but not the majority of people.  I guess if there's really no overhead, then a single $30 purchase is still worth it.  As was said earlier, if you've got a serious home theater and want to invite a bunch of people over, this would be a nice option.  But, that's it.
