My wife wouldn’t even let me finish telling her the story. Probably a good thing, since I can’t get the images I conjured up out of my head. Some people think that animal lovers want to treat them as human beings and give them the same rights. I just happen to think that the punishment should be a strong enough deterrent to the person to never do it again. Sadly, I see these kids growing up to be worse than Michael Vick.
skirge01ModeratorHTPC related? SageTV Mobile Web… although, it’s not an app, but a mobile version of the SageTV Web UI. It’s always cool being able to fix conflicts, schedule or cancel recordings or just check that everything is working okay.
Non-HTPC? I love the barcode scanners and, especially, using the for QR codes. Outside of that, I’m using Handcent SMS (IM client), K-9 Mail, Plume (Twitter), and My-Cast Weather.
I tried the Google Sky Maps and, while it was really cool, I quickly lost interest in it.
skirge01ModeratorMy guess would be that the legality aspect is a bit of an issue for anyone considering developing such a plugin.
skirge01ModeratorYour situation sounds very similar to my own, so I won’t repeat everything. But, I do have over 13TB in my server, so picture your own setup, just much larger. 🙂
I have no plans of moving to WHS 2011 because I simply don’t see any benefit to doing so. I will most likely be moving to a regular Windows 7 installation for the server, using Macrium Reflect for PC backups and FlexRAID for some data protection of my recordings and Blu-ray rips. I have not used Macrium or the latest version of FlexRAID, so I can’t say for certain that they’ll be exactly what I need. But, I have used previous versions of FlexRAID (several years ago) and liked what I saw.
If you don’t want to get that complex, I’d just add more storage (NAS, bigger case, etc) and “archive” shows that sit for a while. You could set up some batch jobs to help automate this or, if you use SageTV, Sage Job Queue (SJQ) could do most of this, but it does have a bit of a learning curve.
This is a situation where there are numerous opportunities and it’s a matter of figuring out which one fits your needs, your setup, and your budget. Note that, other than the hardware I mentioned (and SageTV, of course), all programs I listed are free. SJQ v3 is free, but SJQ v4 is not ($4.99 CAN).
skirge01ModeratorI know there have been a number of suggestions here, so things may have slipped by. Did you try rolling back the graphics drivers, as was pointed out here? If that doesn’t do it, I would strongly suggest trying another PSU, even though the readings came back ok.

But Mike has already said he doesn’t care about system backups so we can assume he won’t care about having to reinstall Windows cleanly or lose the system.

Good point.

…so chances of anything corrupting or hurting it would be minimal.

Remember this statement when you post a blog about how you just spent the weekend rebuilding your server like someone else recently did.
skirge01ModeratorWhy not use extenders? Oh yeah… you don’t use SageTV. 😉
Back to basics with rule #1: A server is NOT to be used as an “every-day” PC. Shame on you for even suggesting such a thing!
skirge01ModeratorGlad to hear it. That whole DOS thing is like hieroglyphics nowadays. It’s definitely a good thing to be familiar with, though, as you’re finding out. Now, you’ll probably find more uses for it in the future.
skirge01ModeratorI’m looking at the results screenshot and noticing that you aren’t running a batch file. It looks like you’re pasting it into the CMD window. Simply put, you can’t do that. Paste the text into a text editor (i.e. notepad… do not use word or wordpad) and save it as commscan.bat to your C: drive and then just type commscan.bat at your C: prompt.
skirge01ModeratorIt looks like a permissions issue. Are you running the CMD prompt as the administrator?
skirge01ModeratorOpen up a regular command prompt window and run the batch file from there. This will ensure that the windows stays open and you can see what sort of feedback/errors you get.
skirge01ModeratorDoes your son have an account on the HTPC? Does it use the same password? (I do recognize that you said you tried to turn off password protection.)
skirge01ModeratorI like comfortable computer chairs, too, but I don’t think that a $1k chair can possibly be 10x more comfortable than a $100 chair. I’ve had very, very good luck by simply going to Office Depot, Office Max, or Staples and sitting in a few. My last chair was under $150 and it’s still very comfortable. Sorry, I can’t find the exact one, but I think that method is your best bet.
skirge01ModeratorYeah, we definitely appreciate the reporting of bugs (or annoyances even) that people find. I believe Mikinho already knows about this one because I think I’m the one who told him. 🙂 I think he’s even got some things in mind for the forums already, but needs to find the time to implement them.
