News - mid-2017 HDR primer @ flatpanelshd

4K is great, especially if you have a large display, but it's not nearly as interesting as HDR. If you're in the market for a new TV, or just want to stay updated on what's going on with the technology this write up is a great place to learn more.

News - Epson announces Home Cinema LS100 short throw laser projector

As home theater enthusiasts we all want a projector. That's a fact. Of course our housing, lifesytle, cost, and partner choices come into play - which is why most of us probably don't have one Smile. Short throw models make it much easier to install and place a projector, but have carried a massive price premium for the convenience. With a MSRP of $3,000 Epson's HC LS100 has made the cost problem much smaller; we'll have to wait for some reviews to see if it can deliver the requred PQ.

Blog - Why Blu-ray is Still the Reigning King

The DVD was unleashed on the Japanese public all the way back in 1996 and the Blu-ray format has been around for 11 years already, meaning we were absolutely due for another shakeup. That transition began with the introduction of the Ultra High Definition (UHD) Blu-ray format and the first movie releases in early 2016. A year and a half later, we have a couple hundred UHD releases on disc, streaming content from the likes of Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, and Vudu, plus straight to your DVR from several cable and satellite providers, among other sources. Discounting the fact that many early UHD releases were simply upscaled versions of existing films, to the untrained eye, it would appear that the revolution was well on its way. However, the truth is far more complex because UHD still has a long way to go before it becomes as ubiquitous as the Blu-ray format it is trying to supplant.  Lest you be led astray...

News - Epson announces five (yes five) affordable home cinema projectors

In what must be an attempt to corner the affordable projector market Epson has announced five home cinema projects ranging in price from $359 to $900. Which means there should be something for pretty much anyone considering a projector to add to their maybe list.

News - LG UP970 reviewed @ HTR

As someone in the market for a UHD Blu-ray player, this review is quite timely. As one of the only players that supports (cough, will support) Dolby Vision (OPPO's will as well) it piques my interest. Just not sure that for the same $, Dolby Vision is enough of a bonus compared to the extras I would net from the XBox One S - even as a non-gamer. Decisions, decisions.

News - Ikea is entering home automation market with Zigbee devices

I love what Ikea did for the lightbulb market, so if they can replicate that success with a line of Zigbee devices. I'm all for it, as long as they are HAC agnostic, and will play nice with any Zigbee compatible network.

News - Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt gets Android compatibility

Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt

I'm more of a total solution guy when it comes to home automation (think HAC + Z-Wave/Zigbee devices), but totally get that there's room in the market for the less committed. That's where the smartphone hosted smart devices like this Schlage Android lock come in. Isn't hard on the eyes either, or wallet. MSRP is $229.

News - Nuvyyo Tablo OTA DVR Reviewed @ HTR

We haven't paid for cable in a few years, but it would be hard to go without access to OTA TV. Personally, I've been using the SiliconDust DVR but obviously that's not for everyone. If you've been looking for an OTA DVR, might want to check out this review.

News - Yale announces slim smartlock

I just added a couple Yale Z-Wave locks to my house. They look great, and have the functionality I wanted. Unfortunately, they aren't nearly as slick looking as these new deadbolts.

I don't think this would have much SAF, but it looks like a fun project to setup and have a play with.

News - Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite review at SNB

For most users I think Ubiquiti USG would be a better choice than the EdgeRouter Lite, but there' no denying that it has a bit more capability - provided you're comfortable on the cmdline.

News - Buy an NVIDIA SHIELD, get Plex Pass for free

If you've been considering picking up a SHIELD, this week is a good time to get it done. If you swing by a Best Buy before July 1 and grab one, you get six months of Plex Pass for free.

FWIW, I'm still a huge SHIELD fan. It has the all-too-rare distinction of a product that keeps getting better. Now that it has Amazon Video and all these great Plex features, it really is a no brainer if you want a streamer that rocks.
