HD programming wars: Comcast says 800 HD channels by 2009

That is a mighty bold statement by Comcast but as you read on you quickly find out it is half PR stunt and half truth. PPV chanels and channels dedicated to a single show will be included in that category. I like the second idea myself. Imagine have a channel that will rotate through a season of your favorite series everyday.

The reality is that many cable networks have yet to commit to launching HD versions of their programming. That was one of the questions DIRECTV faced at CES, as one questioner asked the CEO how the satellite provider planned to offer over 100 channels of HD programming when there were only a handful of networks in HD. DIRECTV said at the time that it had deals in the works with several networks to offer HD versions of their content and sure enough, new HD channels are starting to pop up.
