Struggling Jericho: “Please don’t TiVo our show!”

Rabid fans save Jericho! Ok, so we all know that news by now. Jericho was saved largely by a campaign on the Internet. I am really glad it worked out and will even give the show a whirl just because I liked it. What I want to discuss is the don't TiVo our show part of the ARS article. Lets face it, the bread and butter of the HTPC is to fast forward or entirely skip TV commercials. Let me play the Devil's Advocate here for a minute. What if everyone had a TiVo or HTPC? What would be the purpose of advertising? If no one advertises how are we going to get innovative TV shows?

As with anything in business world, those who adapt survive. What is a new business model that you guys suggest? I want quality programming as much as the next guy, but that won't come without the networks getting some sort of profit. Lets face it I would watch an episode of Cheers over a 45 second You Tube of a 14 year old learning how to skip rope. Can the TV world steal a few ideas from the online music biz? What are your thoughts?

This isn't just Beyer's personal view, however. Nina Tassler, the president of CBS Entertainment, told the New York Times that if fans want the show to live, they need to watch the broadcast because that's how the money gets made. Stressing that live viewing is "of primary importance," Tassler said that "We want them to watch on Wednesday at 8 o'clock… and we need them to recruit new viewers who are going to watch the broadcast."
