How to tell an Xbox 360 is a Jasper

The multiple versions of Xbox 360’s might frustrate some consumers who wish they had waited, but I give Microsoft kudos for continuing to improve and evolve the Xbox–for the same price as older versions. The Jasper is the latest in the line of Xbox360 chips which continues to bring the power hungry console down in wattage as well as noise produced. Of course, if you’re using it solely as an extender, it will never come close to the HP or Linksys devices at less than 10 watts and nearly silent…but then you can’t play Rock Band on those either.

According to my kill-a-watt, the Jasper 360 only uses 90 watts while in Media Center mode, while the Falcon uses about 108. It is noticeably quieter than the Falcon as well, but still not silent enough to be in my home theater. The PSU makes some of the noise and the Jasper will work with the older PSU or a newer one (the newer one won’t work on the Falcon). Not sure if there is any way to tell which PSU is included when you buy it, but the one I bought had the older style PSU.
