Blu-ray Releases – January 18, 2011

Does 90+ minutes of watching Ryan Reynolds trapped in a box sound like a good time for you? If so, you are going to be ecstatic about Buried. Honestly, the movie was much better than I thought it would be, and Reynolds does a pretty good job of keeping it flowing. Paper Man was a pretty entertaining film as well, also with Reynolds who seems to be in everything. Death Race 2 was just painful to watch. And Freakonomics was an oddly designed documentary, where they literally had an entire section on the corruption of Sumo Wrestling, and then followed up by bribing students for better grades–read the book if you haven’t yet, will probably learn more anyways.

MissingRemote’s Pick of the Week

I’m picking Takers more as an overall solid Blu-ray rental than something I think is worthy of ownership. The cast does an admirable job (except for TI…who I found dreadful), and even Paul Walker did his typical performance. The plot is simple, these guys are all thieves and planning one big heist–original, I know. But I found the movie went by fairly well paced, and kept my attention throughout. And some of the action scenes looked great on my home theater. Don’t expect an Oscar-winning performance from anyone, but it is a good ride while it lasts.

Note:  Warner Brothers, Universal and Fox titles which  have the 30-day Netflix/Redbox rental window imposed on them are noted with **  next to the title.
