Netflix Continues Its Streaming Push, Removes “Add to DVD Queue” from Devices

It’s no secret that Netflix would prefer that everyone stream their movies instead of get them on physical disc–the cost associated with maintaining their warehouses I’m sure is ridiculous. They mention that most people that use the DVD Queue do so online, and I have difficulty finding fault there. But still it’s an interesting development. Curious what’s next.

We’re removing the “Add to DVD Queue” option from streaming devices. We’re doing this so we can concentrate on offering you the titles that are available to watch instantly. Further, providing the option to add a DVD to your Queue from a streaming device complicates the instant watching experience and ties up resources that are better used to improve the overall streaming functionality.

  • Makes sense, actually. My kid

Makes sense, actually. My kid keeps adding DVDs at the top of our queue with the iPad. 😉

    “WonderPets? Who ordered WonderPets?!”

  • What? You’re not a fan of
What? You’re not a fan of Whinny, Tuck, and Ming-Ming? Me either. Personally, the day Netflix offered a streaming only plan I switched from 1 out at a time to streaming only. We started out with the 3 out at a time plan before they even offered streaming and gradually worked our way down as the actual streaming improved along with the catalog of movies and shows. It sucks for those who used the DVD queue, but nothing is forever…especially when it’s web based.

  • I use the DVD que for older

I use the DVD que for older films they don’t stream but mainly I use it for Blu-rays.  Until the streaming quality is on par with Blu-rays I’ll go with whoever continues to offer discs(if Netflix ever decides to phase them out completely).

I doubt Netflix will ever fully get out of the mailing disc business, just too many people that like their players (and as you mentioned, no competition with Blu-ray quality).

BUT, i’m sure they hope they can cut the demand in half at least and shrink some of their gigantic storage/mailing centers

  • Hell, I can’t wait until they

Hell, I can’t wait until they start offering 3D blurays.  Come on, they have to, right?  To me, the rental of 3D discs makes the most sense.  I don’t think I want to watch a 3D movie in 3D every single time I want to see it.  And I don’t want to pay the extra to buy the 3D version.

I remember when I tried streaming a movie on Netflix after not having done so in a long time, and it actually played smoothly without buffering every 10 seconds!  So then I got so psyched and started checking out what else they had to offer…and found it wasn’t that stellar of a collection…and then I found that they keep taking stuff down that used to be available for streaming…and then the quality of some things just downright sucks (on my connection at least).  Buffy the Vampire Slayer the TV show, for example, looks so bad I can’t tell Buffy from a vampire, LOL.  It goes from “Cool!”, to “OK”, to “Ehhhh…”.

I’ll take the 2 day wait for DVD or bluray.
