Windows 7 SP1 RTM build leaks ahead of official release
I know Michael will be super excited about this. I’m very curious to learn more about RemoteFX given the popularity of the usage of the Concurrent Remote Desktop Sessions in Windows7 and previous versions. I wonder just how capable this could be (maybe it could replace the need for extenders?)?
WinRumors expects Microsoft to issue Service Pack 1 on January 18 or 25…SP1 will include RemoteFX which provides rich 3-D graphical experience for remote users. The service pack also will include a series of incremental updates, previously released on Windows Update for both Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

I mentioned this in TGB thread but for Media Center developers there are finally a few bug fixes to the API.
PlayMedia w/ VIDEO_TS and a track or time is finally fixed. That has been broken since Fiji. This allows 3rd party apps to resume VIDEO_TS properly andor skip directly to the main track during playback.

I hope Brian Binnerup is happy and reading this!!! I was alongside him as we reported this bug NUMEROUS times to Microsoft, so it’s wonderful to see them listen and finally fix it. Hopefully it can make it into the next MyMovies!
I don’t believe RemoteFx will
I don’t believe RemoteFx will be a replacement for extenders, at least not yet. The hardware costs are too high.
1- To take use Media Center over RemoteFx you need a Hyper-V server running a Windows 7 Ultimate VM.
2- You need Windows 7 Ultimate as your client OS, RemoteFx is not available on lower SKUs.
3- Your Hyper-V server needs a SLAT-enabled processor. This isn’t a big deal since any modern CPU is SLAT enabled, all of the Intel Core i3i5i7 will be and most AMD. Intel refers to it as Extended Page Tables (EPT) and Nested Page Tables (NPT) by AMD. I’m mentioning since a lot of people use hand me down hardware for their servers.
4- Your Hyper-V servers needs a fairly powerful GPU. With an Intel i3i5 for instance the max resolution that work reliably was a single 1024 x 768 client. There is a table somewhere but for 1080p you need ~200MB video memory for he first client and ~90MB for the second. When using an ATI FirePro v7800 it worked beautifully but thats a fairly expensive card.
I also haven’t installed the leaked SP1 yet so I can’t confirm Media Center still emulates the console over RemoteFx RDP.

I looked into RemoteFX about 6 months ago when SP1 was first announced. Michael Welter is correct on the requirements; the technology was designed for Virtual Desktop implementations. Due to the requirements, your media center PC will not be accessible using RemoteFX.
I still have some hope that it’ll work for standard RDP connections, but I wouldn’t count on it.

If anyone is interested, I installed the leaked SP1 on a test machine and Live TV over RemoteFx RDP still works fine.
Like I said, it is a niche within a niche but I’m excited to use it for a couple thin clients.
