Blu-Ray Releases – March 29, 2011

After getting ripped apart for my picks last week, the pressure was on me for this week. Luckily there are a TON to pick from (or is that a bad thing).  Do I go with the Scream trilogy? Nah. The Resident I heard good things about, but haven’t seen it yet. Tangled actually wasn’t awful, but about as predictable as every other Disney movie ever. Dogtooth got some notice at the Oscars, but haven’t yet seen it. Fair Game was decent, but man there was some overacting–but it is based on a true story, but it was written by the woman herself so kinda biased.

MissingRemote’s Pick of the Week

Ok, so this time this really was an easy choice. I’m going to go on the shoulders of the Academy who gave the Oscar to Natalie Portman for her performance here. Quick summary of the plot–she’s a ballerina with some issues. Doesn’t sound all that interesting? Well, trust me it was a twisted movie, and Mila Kunis is….let’s go with “talented.” I’m not sure I’d want to watch the movie multiple times, but it was a pretty weird experience.

Note:  Warner Brothers, Universal and Fox titles which  have the 30-day Netflix/Redbox rental window imposed on them are noted with **  next to the title.

Let me be the first to say:

Let me be the first to say:  good choice!  Wink  While I haven’t seen it, the wife has and she was very impressed by it.  She also said it was a pretty messed up story…  but, in a good way.  Without having seen it and based on what she said, I’m thinking along the lines of how weird Memento was.

The only other movie that sticks out is The Secret of NIMH.  That was actually on PBS this past weekend.  Boy did it look horrible in SD, so I hope the transfer to HD improved it enough to be watchable.

  • I haven’t seen Black Swan

I haven’t seen Black Swan either but I want to.

I’m pretty excited about Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection as well.

  • Wait, Ten Commandments hits

Wait, Ten Commandments hits Blu-ray for the first time and not even a mention, but Dogtooth, Fair Game and Tangled 3D are?! Ten Commandments was a huge box office hit (5th highest grossing movie in North America all time adjusted for inflation) and is definitely a classic epic movie.

  • lol, good call, 10

lol, good call, 10 commandments is a classic, albeit somewhat outdated 🙂

    • Yeah, it was made about 2000

Yeah, it was made about 2000 years too late… 😉

Oh man, that really is a good list of movies coming out.  I hope the transfer quality is good; quite a few I wouldn’t mind owning.  Soylent Green would be cool to see in full HD.

The ‘Star Trek II: Wrath Khan & Star Trek IV: Voyage’ made me giggle.  1,3,5…  Naw, don’t watch those, watch these, these ones don’t suck.

    • I’d be willing to wager that

I’d be willing to wager that Ten Commandments will outsell each of these titles including Black Swan even though it is “outdated”. Money mouth

      • I think you’re right.  After

I think you’re right.  After reading this review http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/4578/commandments_gift.html , I want to pick it up myself and check it out.

        • Am I the only one who thinks

Am I the only one who thinks the tablets in the below image from the review look like raw hamburger patties?

I think I’m going to grill burgers tonight now.

          •  Just add grill marks.I am

            Laughing Just add grill marks.

I am tempted to see this in BD glory. The reviewer is right about crowd scenes in movies back before CG. It is amazing to see such massive amounts of extras that film makers would use back then.

          • I’ve actually never watched

I’ve actually never watched the movie.  I’ll probably just rent it though.

OMG, seriously!? How am I getting flack for not recommending it and this guy hasn’t seen it! 🙂

And I would bet that Tangled sells more than Ten Commandments.  I didn’t see that much coming out this week.  I liked Scream but not enough to make it my pick of the week.  Glad to see Teen Wolf coming out.
