Google Will Open Source SageTV Software

Some pretty crazy news passed my way by our friend George S., linking to a forum post by Jeff from (formerly) SageTV, announcing that they somehow convinced Google to open source the SageTV code! What does this mean? It’s too early to tell, but given how involved software developers were in making SageTV a great experience, I have a hunch they’ll get together and make something pretty special. In any case, it’s better than being dead as it had seemed Google wasn’t doing anything with it.

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve had much to say to you all…but I’ve got some great news for the SageTV community. Google, in all its infinite wisdom (mmmm, kool-aid), has agreed to open source the SageTV platform!

This isn’t happening today…but will be happening in the near future (i.e. months, not years). As we move closer to this, I’ll update with more details that relate to this. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that this was going to happen. I’m looking forward to see what the community can do with SageTV once it is fully open.

I certainly wouldn’t state that ‘Google wasn’t doing anything with it’. They have been, and will continue, to use it for the primary reason they purchased. SageTV is the DVR and interface for their Google Fiber TV service.
