Why is the Atari VCS a thing?

I’m not a gamer, so I would love it if someone would explain to me why the Atari VCS exists. And while you’re at it, why is it $200? I’ve never actually done it, but AFAIK if you really have a hankering for some low-res nostalgia gaming you could approximate this experience (Linux based game emulator) on a Raspberry Pi for quite a lot less than $200… If you cannot resist the pull of the Atari VCS, and its amazingly lack of detail around specs and features, you can sign up now, for the opportunity to pre-order, come May 30.
