Walmart sells Vudu to Fandango
Vudu is my favorite platform for streaming movies because they prioritize quality, both on the audio and video side of things. While it’s not quite as good as UltraHD Blu-ray, it’s close enough that I don’t feel the same necessity to own a disc that I used to.
I guess it’s not really surprising that Walmart would sell off Vudu, but Fandango seems an odd choice to me. Hopefully, it’s all good things, but it would seriously suck if they changed priorities, or got crushed under Google/Apple’s monolithic boot.
Hi Vudu customers,
We have some exciting news to share with you!
Vudu has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Fandango, the ultimate digital network for all things movies & TV.
While there will be many more exciting things to share in the months ahead, nothing about the Vudu experience is changing – your movie & TV library is safe, and you will continue to have access to all your Vudu apps across your favorite devices.
Vudu will continue to deliver an amazing experience, and we promise that the future will bring more new features, offerings, and other benefits as we join the Fandango family. In the meantime, you can find more details here.
Sincerely,
Vudu team
I agree with your assessment on quality. The thing that drives me bonkers, you can’t get surround sound when running off a PC. So I stick to Netflix and ITunes. Amazon only spits out stereo too.
“Can I get surround sound when playing movies on my PC/Mac?
Unfortunately, no. PC and Mac is limited to stereo audio. If you would like to hear surround sound audio, you will need a Vudu embedded device connected to a surround sound system.” 5/2019
That’s one of the reasons I ended up with Shields everywhere. I found that we were consuming more, and more OTT content, and that experience on the HTPC wasn’t awesome, and using the Smart TV apps wasn’t much better.
Your decision was reasonable. But for some reason I want to world to conform to my expectations. that always works out well, right?
