High Def Digest Japanese news site Nikkei.net broke the news that Toshiba has scheduled a press conference for 5pm Tokyo time Tuesday (that’s 12am PST), at which the company is expected to announce that it will immediately stop manufacturing all HD DVD hardware and that it will cease selling them at retail by the end of March.

Has anyone seen this? DailyTech Reuters cites an NHK Japan source stating that Toshiba will be officially pulling the plug on HD DVD as early as next week. "We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business," said the source, who asked not to be identified.

Another one bites the dust. Up until now, Netflix has been stocking both formats. But now they will be switching exclusively to Blu-ray. Reuters Netflix said that with such a clear signal from the industry, it will only buy Blu-ray discs going forward and will phase out stock of HD DVD by about the end of the year.
