News - Ikea is entering home automation market with Zigbee devices

I love what Ikea did for the lightbulb market, so if they can replicate that success with a line of Zigbee devices. I'm all for it, as long as they are HAC agnostic, and will play nice with any Zigbee compatible network.

News - Zipato @ CES 2015

I don’t remember seeing Zipato at CES last year, so when I noticed their unique Z-Wave ZIPABOX home automation controller (HAC) while roaming the show floor I made a point to stop in and have a look.

News - VeraControl @ CES 2015

The biggest news from Vera Control is that we finally have a controller with the new Series 500 Z-Wave+ SoC. In fact, there will eventually be three different models; VeraEdge, VeraPlus, and VeraSecure, with VeraEdge available now and the other two expected to ship early summer.

News - ZigBee v. Bluetooth Mesh - Fight!?

There was a time when the whole ZigBee v. Bluetooth (BT) question would have been kind of silly. BT was very capable, but its power characteristics made unsuitable for the types of devices that a Home Automation (HA) protocol like ZigBee is intended to address. That has changed significantly over the last couple years, with BT LE (Low Energy) taking on RF4CE and now with BT Mesh entering the mix. How these protocols compete and complement each is an interesting topic for anyone who likes to stay on top of the specifics of how the HA market is developing.

With that in mind, GreenPeak Technologies just released a whitepaper where they address this topic, albeit from the perspective of a ZigBee player. Either way, it makes for an interesting read.

“A decade ago, WiFi and Bluetooth battled but ended up sharing the home networking space and successfully growing the market to where both technologies are now found everywhere,” explains Cees Links, CEO of GreenPeak Technologies. “The battle is brewing again as Bluetooth Mesh is now attempting to move from the sensor wearable space into the ultra-low power sensor networking space, today successfully served by ZigBee. However, it will take a lot of work to evolve Bluetooth Mesh to the position where it can provide the functions and capabilities that ZigBee already provides today. So why confuse and divide the market?”

News - Home Automation @ CES 2014

This year’s show was focused heavily on home automation (HA) and the “Internet of Things” device so I spent most of my time at the show running down different HA vendors and talking to them about the products they have, and the ones that should be out sometime this year. Instead of breaking each one into its own post I decided to group them all together in one post, by focus, so that hopefully it’s easier for you (the reader) to understand where the competitive lines are drawn.

News - Kwikset & ipDatatel Announce Zigbee Integration

Kwikset Deadbolt ZigbeeWhen I was building my home automation (HA) system, the lack of devices and good integration between those devices was the main reason I settled on Z-Wave. In many ways Zigbee is a superior technology though, and also has the benefit of being supported by many chip manufactures (Z-Wave is controlled by Sigma Designs) so it's great to see product announcements like this one by Kwikset and ipDatatel calling out explict support as part of a "Turnkey Security System". I would love to see more of these, as well as a thriving DIY device & controller market for Zigbee.
